Spooktacular Energy-Saving Tips for Autumn

The start of October also brings the start of Autumn and colder days. With the nights growing longer and the temperature dropping, SME businesses across the UK must reassess their energy use to adapt to the changing temperatures.

Energy Audit

Autumn is the perfect time to conduct an energy audit on your business. An energy audit helps you to understand exactly how your energy is consumed, allowing you to identify areas for improvement. You can contact a professional to assess your building’s energy efficiency and it will test: 

• Lighting 

• Heating 

• Equipment 

LEDs

Swapping out your current bulbs to LED bulbs instead can save a lot of energy, and as daylight is slowly decreasing, this is the perfect time to try this out.

LED lights can use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and also last longer too!

If your business has many lights on, try switching them out to LED bulbs to save energy whilst lighting up a big space.

Encourage Energy-Saving Habits 

Turn off equipment 

• Whenever the business is closed, or you are not using an appliance, encourage staff to switch off equipment and lights, so you are not wasting any unnecessary energy.

Insulate your business 

• Poor insulation causes heat loss and leads to higher energy bills, so make sure you check for any drafts you might have in your business.

• A draft could come from windows, doors or gaps.

• To prevent drafts, seal up these gaps with caulks or weatherstrips.

• You can also improve insulation by using draft stoppers and insulated curtains. 

• Poorly insulated roofs or walls can result in your business losing 25-35% of heat, so make sure you insulate your business this autumn to save on heating costs.

Improve your heating systems 

• Use a smart thermostat to schedule your heating timings with your business hours.

Upgrade to energy-efficient equipment 

• Upgrade all your equipment to be certified by the Energy Saving Trust - the investment is worthwhile as you will have long-term savings over time.
