Less reading.More knowing.

Automatic meter readings and a more useful view of your energy. Find out how smart metering works, what installation involves and how to get help.

Your energy.Better understood.

Smart meters record your gas or electricity consumption and, when connected, send readings to Jellyfish automatically. That means less time taking readings and more information to help you manage your energy.

We offer smart metering solutions to eligible customers as part of the national rollout. Talk to our team about your premises, the installation process and the options available for your supply.

Our rollout information

Small device.Useful difference.

A smart meter can make managing your supply more straightforward when it is connected and sending readings.

Readings, automatically.

A communicating smart meter sends readings to your supplier, reducing the need to take and submit them yourself.

A clearer bill.

Automatic readings help your bills reflect the energy you actually use. If your meter loses its connection, we may still need a manual reading.

Understand your usage.

More detailed consumption information helps you see patterns, plan your budget and identify where energy could be saved.

Let’s find a timethat works.

We work with Haste Metering for electricity and gas meter installations. They will contact eligible customers by telephone or email to agree a suitable appointment.

You can also ask our team about eligibility, installation availability and any site-specific work. Your appointment information will come from Jellyfish or Haste.

A little preparation.A smoother exchange.

The information for your particular appointment will be confirmed when you book. These are the essentials to plan for.

  • Have an adult on site.

Someone over 18 needs to be at the property throughout the appointment and able to give the engineer access to the meter points.

  • Make room for the engineer.

Keep the area around each meter clear. Have any keys, access codes or permissions ready if your meter is in a secure location.

  • Plan for a short interruption.

Allow 30–90 minutes without power, depending on the number of meters and complexity of the exchange. We or Haste will confirm what to expect when booking.

  • Tell us if your plans change.

Give us at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange. A missed appointment or a visit where the engineer cannot gain access may incur an abort fee.

Know whatto expect.

  • A call before arrival.

An engineer from our metering partner, Haste Metering, will contact you before arriving to check that the installation can go ahead.

  • Identification and an explanation.

The engineer will show identification and explain the work before removing the relevant existing meter and installing a SMETS2 device.

  • Get to know your meter.

The engineer will explain the controls and screens. You can also ask for energy efficiency advice before they leave.

A code wework to.

Jellyfish follows the Consolidated Metering Code of Practice (CoMCoP), part of the Retail Energy Code, for smart meter installations for domestic and business consumers. This replaces earlier installation codes including SMIS and SMICoP.

Your smartmeter questions.

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter is a digital gas or electricity meter that records your energy use and sends readings to your supplier automatically when it is communicating. It can help you understand your usage and reduce the need for manual readings.

Why might my business benefit?

Automatic readings can make billing more accurate and reduce administration. More detailed usage information can help you identify consumption patterns and opportunities to save energy. A smart meter does not itself guarantee lower bills.

Do I have to have one?

You can speak to our team about your options, eligibility and any meter replacement requirements that apply to your premises. For household guidance on choosing a smart meter, see Ofgem’s official information linked below.

How do I arrange an installation?

Jellyfish works with Haste Metering to arrange eligible installations. Haste may contact you by phone or email to agree an appointment. You can also contact our customer service team to request a smart meter and discuss availability.

How long will the installation take?

Plan for 30–90 minutes of power interruption, depending on the meters being exchanged and the complexity of the work. The engineer normally calls ahead. Your appointment details will explain the expected interruption for your site.

Will I pay for the installation?

Standard smart meter installations are free under the national rollout. Complex installations, difficult access or additional works may involve a charge. Jellyfish and our metering partner will explain any exceptional costs before you confirm the appointment.

Will installing a smart meter change my prices?

The installation itself does not change your agreed energy prices. Ask our team if you would like to discuss the products available for your supply.

Where can I see my energy usage?

You can view your energy usage through your Jellyfish online account. Contact us if you need help accessing your account or understanding the information shown.

Why am I still receiving estimated bills or requests for readings?

A smart meter needs a working communications connection to send readings. Signal or connection problems can mean we still need manual readings while our metering team investigates; a further visit may be necessary.

Please keep providing readings when requested. If the problem continues for more than a month after installation, get in touch. You can also tell us if a previously working meter has stopped sending readings or if the issue began after switching to Jellyfish.

What information does a smart meter collect?

Smart meters collect information about energy use. They do not collect personal information about your activities. Jellyfish handles your information under data protection law and uses it to provide energy services. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal data.

What happens if I change supplier?

Your final Jellyfish bill uses the closing meter reading for the change of supply, and your new supplier begins from the same reading. If you have a metering issue after leaving Jellyfish, speak to your new supplier.

Can I switch back to a traditional meter?

Please talk to us first. Traditional meters can be difficult to source, and any exchange would need a specific quote. Our published guidance indicated a possible cost of £500–£1,000, depending on the meter and installation. That is an indication from the guidance, rather than a confirmed quotation for your property.

What if the engineer misses the appointment or arrives outside the agreed time?

Contact us so we can investigate with the metering team. You may be entitled to compensation depending on the circumstances. Our published guidance asks you to allow two working days for us to look into the visit and come back to you.

How do I cancel or change my appointment?

Contact Jellyfish as soon as you know. Please give at least 48 hours’ notice, as set out in our installation preparation guidance. Late cancellations or visits where the engineer cannot gain access may incur an abort fee; we will explain the arrangements for your appointment.
